The Electoral College failed in their constitutional duty when they ratified Donald Trump as president. Now we need to look to other constitutional safeguards to protect us from a man clearly unfit to serve as our Commander-in-Chief and the unfolding debacle.
The Twenty-fifth Amendment provides for the removal of an incapacitated president, “Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.”
Surely, Trump’s 77 minute free-wheeling stream of whatever consciousness Donald Trump possesses, demonstrated he does not have the capacity to act as Commander-in Chief. While I am fearful of a Pence presidency, I am not sure we can survive 47 more months of this out-of-control lunatic. This man, along with his kleptocratic, autocratic followers, need to go now and we must demand that Trump be removed. At this point, it is up to us, “We the People” to take back our Republic and secure our democracy for ourselves, our children, and for generations to come.
